Course contents
The Program is worth a total of 60 credits (CFU - Crediti Formativi Universitari), for a total amount of 1.500 hours, divided as follows:
- 388 hours of on-campus lectures and distance learning
- 1112 hours of individual study and project preparation.
All activities will be in English.
Course contents and methodology
Through a combination of lectures, seminars, practical exercises and best practices analisys, the selected participants will acquire competences and methodologies on:
- in-depth knowledge on the international legal framework for protecting cultural properties and natural protected areas, combatting cultural crimes, and ensuring the rights of access to culture, to better understand duties of governments, citizens, communities and non-governmental organizations;
- knowledge and tools for understanding and assessing the physical damages and the cultural, social and economic losses caused by the crisis;
- comprehension of the potential of culture in addressing and managing the post-conflict or post-disaster reconstruction, with specific reference to the role of the culture capital and locally based knowledge and creativity in the social and economic recovery of affected communities;
- unique insights into the policies and tools of UNESCO, other international organizations operating in the field as well as international cooperation schemes;
- knowledge about the most advanced ICT’s applied to emergency scenarios.
Course topics
The course consists in a mix of lectures, exercises and study visits, and is divided into 7 learning modules (click on the following menu items):
1. Distance learning: Foundations of Cultural Heritage Protection
The introductory distance learning phase is aimed to familiarize with the main course topics: the International Law for the protection of cultural heritage, the Economics of cultural heritage, the politics of cultural heritage protection, a sociological approach to the protection of cultural heritage and some examples of works based on Project Cycle Management methodology . The module is delivered through asynchronous learning. Participants are expected to acquire basic knowledge and competences through the guided study of teaching resources and the carrying out of assignments.
2. The law of international protection of cultural heritage
- Introduction to the international rules protecting the cultural heritage
- International humanitarian law and the protection of cultural heritage
- The role of international criminal justice
- The contribution of human rights law (the construction of the protection of cultural heritage as a human right)
- The protection of indigenous property rights
- The role, duties and responsibilities of peace support operations and, more in general, of intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations
3. The economics of cultural heritage
- Introduction to the economics of cultural heritage
- Cultural heritage as value for local development
- Behavioral economics
- Building Back Better strategy
- Post Disaster Needs Assessment
- Climate Change and Cultural Heritage
4. Illicit Trafficking of Cultural Property
The programme includes a week dedicated to the illicit trade in cultural goods, with lectures by international experts and Carabinieri from the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit.

- The legal market for cultural goods
- The illicit market
- The fight against illicit trafficking
- The duties and responsabilities of operators
- Case studies
5. The politics of cultural heritage protection
- Conflict management, State building and Cultural Property Protection
- Thinking and annihilating the “enemy”: a path to the theory of politics
- Politics, heritage and conservation
6. Actions for cultural heritage protection
- Intercultural Negotiation: language and behavioral patterns in conflict situations
- Property protection in a local and/or global perspective
- Case studies
7. Information management
- Tools for mapping and data management
- Digital Humanities and electronic resources for Cultural Property Protection
- The role of ICT’ s in prevention, emergency response and recovery process
- Accessibility to information through internet and emerging technologies
- Cyber security situation awareness
8. Project Cycle Management
The course includes a special module dedicated to Project Cycle Management, aimed at transferring to the participants capacities to draft a project work related to intervening in emergency and post-emergency scenarios, according to the most advanced methodologies from international agencies.

Study visits
The course program includes a series of study visits to museums, institutions and organizations that collaborate with the Master.
The participants of the first edition visited some of the most important museums and institutions at the local level, including: the Royal Museums of Turin, Palazzo Madama, the Museo Egizio of Turin, the Italian Center for Photography - CAMERA, the Royal Residence of Venaria, the Centre for Conservation and Restoration "La Venaria Reale", the National Historical Museum of Artillery, Palazzo Chiablese and the Castle of Moncalieri.
For those who are unable to attend for financial reasons, the corresponding alternative teaching hours will be covered by study materials and individual exercises.
The program of activities might be subject to changes. Other special lectures and seminars might be organized during the course.
